How to Mount a TV on a Concrete Block Wall
Why Standard Anchors Fail in Florida Construction and What Actually Holds

In most of the country, mounting a television means finding two studs. In South Florida, the wall you want to mount on is frequently concrete block with a thin furring strip and drywall over it — and there are no studs to find.
This is the source of a specific and common failure: someone locates what a stud finder reports as solid material, drives lag bolts into a furring strip, hangs a sixty-pound television, and the assembly pulls out of the wall weeks later.
Identify what your wall actually is
Tap the wall. A hollow, drum-like sound suggests drywall over stud framing or over furring strips with an air gap. A dull, dead thud suggests drywall tight to masonry or masonry with a skim coat.
Drill a small test hole in an inconspicuous spot at the intended mount height. Drywall dust is white and powdery; you will feel the bit break through into either air, wood, metal, or immediately hit gritty resistance. Gray, sandy dust and hard resistance means block or concrete.
In most South Florida homes, exterior walls are block and interior partition walls are wood or metal stud. Condo demising walls between units are often poured concrete. Each requires a different anchor.
Anchoring into concrete block correctly
Concrete block is hollow. It has solid webs — the vertical dividers between the hollow cells — and thin face shells over the voids. An anchor set into a face shell over a void has a fraction of the holding power of one set into a web or filled cell.
Sleeve anchors and wedge anchors, installed with a hammer drill using the correct masonry bit diameter and embedment depth, are the appropriate hardware. Plastic conical anchors sold for drywall are not, regardless of what the package claims about masonry.
Drill depth matters: the hole must be deeper than the anchor so debris has somewhere to go, and the hole must be blown clean before the anchor is set. Dust left in the hole dramatically reduces holding capacity.
- Use a hammer drill with a carbide masonry bit matched to the anchor
- Set anchors into solid webs or fully grouted cells where possible
- Drill deeper than anchor length and clear dust from the hole
- Use four anchor points, not two, and verify the mount is level before loading
Metal stud walls: the other common surprise
Many newer condos and virtually all commercial build-outs use metal studs. Metal studs are thin gauge steel; lag bolts will not thread into them meaningfully and will strip.
The correct hardware is a heavy-duty toggle designed for hollow-wall use with a rated load capacity, ideally with the mount spanning multiple studs to distribute weight.
Height, viewing angle, and above-fireplace installations
The most common regret after a mounting job is height. Screens installed at the height that looks striking on a showroom floor are frequently too high for comfortable viewing from a seated position.
A practical rule: with a fixed mount, the center of the screen should be near seated eye level. If the mount must be higher — above a fireplace or a console — use a tilting or pull-down mount so the screen angle can be corrected.
Above-fireplace installations also need heat clearance considerations. Check the manufacturer's temperature limits and the mantel's heat deflection before committing.
Cable management on masonry
In-wall cable pass-through kits work in drywall over stud framing. On block or poured concrete, running cable inside the wall is generally not feasible without chasing the masonry, which is invasive.
The practical alternative is a paintable surface raceway run vertically to a console and painted to match the wall. Done carefully, it is barely visible and takes a fraction of the effort.
Before you drill: what is inside the wall
Electrical conduit is frequently run inside block cells, and plumbing may be present near kitchens and bathrooms. Drilling blind into a wall in this construction carries real risk.
Scan the area, consider what is on the other side of the wall, and stay clear of the vertical lines above and below outlets and switches, since conduit typically runs to them.
